Why I sew for brides... by Tara...

It is well-known in Africa that as you eat a stalk of sugarcane, each segment gets sweeter and sweeter as you go. When my husband proposed, he told me our love would be like sugarcane...each segment of life getting sweeter and sweeter. This is why I named my shop Sugarcane Studios, and why I specialize in bridal alterations.

I want you to feel that your wedding day is just the beginning of so much to come. Whether you will be in a huge church, on a mountain, or anywhere in between, you want to make it the most beautiful and memorable day you can. MY job is to be sure you are not thinking about the fit of your dress at all. It is my personal belief that a well-fit dress is the most essential item for feeling beautiful and confident on your day. A perfectly-fit dress means that you can walk the aisle confidently, hug every last relative with ease, dance all night with abandon, and run to the getaway car without tripping. Your memories will include these special, sentimental moments…not memories of constantly pulling your dress up, or tripping on your hem.

bridal alterations

With a degree in clothing design, a 10-year career in the New York costume industry, and 10 years in the bridal industry my knowledge of FIT is solid, and my eye for proportion is honed.

There is no typical Sugarcane bride...

You may have bought your dress at a store that does not provide alterations...or online...or at a trunk sale...or a second-hand shop, etc. You may have a vintage dress that needs new life. You may just need a bustle, or some bust pads.

You may have bought a sample dress and now you need to make it work. You may want a custom veil, or a unique sash, or something you’ve seen on Pinterest. Or, you may simply want a personal touch...to NOT feel like a part of the wedding "factory".

We can provide all these things, and more.
Come in and let us take care of you and your dress. Wedding alterations do not have to be stressful. You can trust us to make your bridal alterations as simple and painless as possible.

icon Bridal Alterations FAQs

When should I schedule my first bridal alterations fitting?

We want you to come in as soon as possible, but, a minimum of 8 weeks is needed to do your bridal alterations. We charge a rush fee for brides that have less than 8 weeks before their wedding.

Also, please come AFTER you have lost the weight you plan to lose, AFTER you have decided which shoes to wear on your wedding day, and AFTER you have any special undergarments you need for your dress. I advise brides to get on my calendar as soon as they order their dress and know when their dress will arrive. We get VERY busy and sometimes have to limit the number of brides we can help. Once you are on our calendar, however, we are committed to you.

Also keep in mind whether your menstrual cycle causes you to bloat or not. If this is an issue, you will want to fit your dress during the same time of the month that you will be getting married. Even emotional responses can affect how you feel about your body and, therefore your dress. Scheduling your fitting during the same time of the month that your wedding will take place will ensure that we are fitting to the way your body will be on your wedding day also.

What should I bring to my fitting?

MANDATORY--the shoes you will be wearing with your dress. MANDATORY--any pieces or parts of things you want to include on your dress (your grandma's lace, a special ribbon, a brooch, etc.) SUGGESTED--the veil and jewelry you plan to wear. (Many brides LOVE to see it all put together to get an idea of the whole picture.) SUGGESTED--a TRUSTED friend or relative (to get an outside opinion and to learn how to help you with your dress. Choose this person carefully. They should be supportive and positive and focused on YOUR vision.)

Do I need special undergarments?

We like to fit most dresses without any undergarments. Most dresses are made with boning, cups, and/or enough layering so that once they are fitted correctly, they will support the bust without additional undergarments. Sometimes strapless bras or corset-like garments fight against the dress, causing slipping...they can also cause bulk inside...and often the neckline shapes are not the same and they peak out the top. We use sew-in cups and a few other "tricks" or methods to fit the bust.

HOWEVER, if your dress is super soft or does not have support like boning…..OR if you need an undergarment to feel comfortable, supported, or confident, then you definitely should find something to give you the support and confidence you need. We will make it work!

Also, some curvier women, or older women, like the shaping or smoothing that an undergarment provides, and that is GREAT. Wear and bring what makes you feel good...that is no problem. We just don't insist that it is always necessary for everyone.

I've never done this before...what should I expect at my first fitting?

Don't worry, we've helped over 1400 brides to date. You will be in capable hands. We will start by looking at your dress and talking about what you want done. You will then put the dress on (with appropriate undergarments) and your fitter will troubleshoot the best way to alter your dress. They will pin/mark/measure your dress according to the desired fit, and will take notes during the fitting.

Once you are pinned into your dress, you will move, dance, sit, hug, and anything else you will need to do on your wedding day...in order for you to feel how your dress fits. We aim to have each bride wear her dress for at least 20-30 minutes to determine if it needs to be loosened or tightened. This is because your dress, especially if it is brand new, will ease out after being worn and/or will settle onto the body after the bride moves around. Or, if we have pinned it too much, and is uncomfortable to move or breathe, we can let it out a bit and find the perfect median.

During this time of wearing your dress, you will put on the shoes and we will mark the hem, if necessary. We will also discuss and pin up a rough version of the bustle. This is also the time to add the veil or any other details you want to include or discuss...lace, ribbons, adding sleeves, etc.

Once we feel like your dress is as close as we can get it, you will take it off and we will keep it to alter. While you are changing, your fitter will add up the cost of your alterations, ask for your approval, and take a 50% deposit. We will also pull up the dates of your follow-up and final fittngs to make sure they still work for you, making any changes necessary.

How many fittings will my dress require?

Most of the wedding dresses we alter need 3 total fittings. Occasionally, a dress is done in only 2 fittings (initial fitting plus one more), but with the multi-layered, complex way most dresses are built, pins can only do so much in giving the idea of the fit. Also body changes and emotions might mean we need to do another fitting to get it just right. Please remember that it is a PROCESS, not a magic wand. Sometimes it takes extra time to get it just right.

Are you sure you can handle my dress, my situation?

After working with hundreds of brides and seeing just about everything, we are confident that we can find a solution, no matter what your situation is. But, the only way for YOU to feel confident is to meet in person with your dress, and discuss it together. We strive to be as clear as possible in my communication and pricing, and to lay everything out initially, so if you have read the info here and still have questions, feel free to email us.

If you are doubtful about whether Sugarcane Studios is the right place to get your alterations done, please plan a consultation and we can meet in person to see if we are a good fit. We do charge a non-refundable consultation fee. If you decide not to move forward, the consultation fee covers the time spent meeting and putting together a quote.

How much will my bridal alterations cost?

Most brides in our shop average $500-1000 for their alterations costs. Of course, it can be less or more than that, depending on your dress and your particular fit/situation. We use mostly flat rates for our pricing so that we can quote you a firm quote for the work at your initial fitting. Anything that is not a flat rate will be priced at $65/hr.

In general, the biggest cost variables are the amount of handwork needed, the number of layers in your dress, and how closely the dress fits you initially. Handwork like lace and/or beaded details can add significantly to the costs of your alterations. Additionally, the more layers your dress has, the more the hem and the bustle will cost. Hem layers with horsehair braid at the hems can add up significantly also. And, finally, if your dress is several sizes too large (or small) for you (usually this happens with sample dresses), then it generally takes a lot more alterations and can be significantly more expensive.

If you want to have an idea of cost before your fitting, you can email a photo to us for a BROAD range, but to get a hard quote, you will need to pay for a consultation. We do not quote firm prices without seeing the dress in person.

How much will my alterations cost?

Our prices are based on our studio rate of $65/hr. For a full, detailed list, push the pricing button.

When will my alterations be done?

Generally, 2 weeks minimum. We do a ton of bridal alterations, so between March and October, we stay booked several weeks out. If you need something done more quickly, you are welcome to give us a call to see if it is possible. We also may need to charge a rush fee if we have to re-book other clients or work overtime to get it done.

Can I stop in?

We do fittings by appointment only. If you have a repair job, and do not need to try it on, then you are welcome to come by Tuesday through Saturday 10-6. But, if you need a fitting, please book an appointment by calling our studio.

Can you make curtains or cushions or fix my tent?

In short, we only sew clothing. We do not take on upholstery or home-type projects. It is not in our wheel-house, so it is best to go to someone who does that type of thing often. And, we do not take on anything dirty. Since we do so much bridal, we cannot take the risk of getting dirt in our shop or our machines. We recommend calling “Foam and Fabrics” in Fletcher…they have a list of upholstery people to recommend.

Do you embroider things?

No, we do not have this machinery. We recommend “Monogram Asheville” at the Asheville Outlets. That is where we take our things needing embroidery.

Do you repair machines?

No.

Do you teach sewing classes?

We are currently offering 1-on-1 sewing lessons to adults and children over 12 years. We charge $65/hr and you will work with one of our extrememely talented seamstresses on a project or focus of your choosing. Use the contact page to send us a message and we will send you a pdf with the info.

How does the process work?

All custom work starts with a consultation. You will pay a consultation fee when booking the appointment. When you come in to meet with our customs manager, Emily, you will look at any inspiration pictures you have, look at garments you want to work on or copy, or any other item that will help communicate your vision. Emily will ask a ton of questions, offer suggestions, take notes, and take your measurements. After the consultation, Emily will do any necessary research and will put together a hard quote for your work. If you choose to move forward, after receiving the quote, we will send you an invoice and you will pay 50% as a deposit. If you choose not to move forward, the consult fee covers Emily’s time in the consultation as well as putting the quote together. The remaining balance of the quote will be paid at each of 3 fittings, with the final payment due when the work is done. This will be laid out in the quote provided.

How much will it cost?

Our studio rate is currently $65/hr. Custom clothing costs significantly more than what you will find off-the-rack. But, they are made to your own personal preferences, to your own body shape, and out of the fabrics that are high quality, long lasting, and chosen by you. These are truly one-of-a-kind garments and can be worn and treasured for many years to come.

I can’t find anyone who will ...

Yes! Doing work that is fully-customized to each customer is NOT EASY. And, it is not the most lucrative way to work. There are few places that will take on this type of work. The art of sewing has been lost and is not appreciated the way it was in the past. We are highly skilled, creative, and patient artists, and we do our best to reach the vision that our clients have. We will not be the right fit for everyone, and that is okay.

icon Vintage Gown Redesign

bride in vintage wedding dress

This is some of our favorite work to do....giving new life and a new personality to vintage wedding gowns.

To take a sentimental, but often sad or damaged, wedding dress and re-vive it…this is one of the most satisfying types of work! We love seeing some of the yellow come out when we soak old pieces. And we love modernizing the dresses by removing dated sleeves or chokingly-high necklines. Taking off the huge bows from the 80s, or scaling down the volume of a skirt can turn a dress from a mother or an aunt into the bride's very own. What a moment to witness...when the bride finally sees herself and her personality come through.

We work by appointment only, so book now! We look forward to helping you! Our knowledge of fit is solid, and our eye for proportion is honed.

icon Vintage Gown Redesign FAQs

How much will it cost?

Depending on the work done, a vintage dress could range similar to an average bridal dress at $500-1000 if all that is needed is basic fitting alterations and tweaks. But, if the bride wants to cut down necklines, re-work sleeves or other major changes, the cost could go as high as a fully custom dress somewhere more like $1500-2000. But, most vintage dresses I have done are right in between these two groups and average around $800-1200.

What do I need to know beforehand?

The biggest discussion with the original owner of the dress is whether the dress will be considered yours and you are allowed to make any changes you want…or whether you need to keep the original gown design the same so it can continue to be passed on to other people. This is a vital conversation to have ahead of seeing me so we know what your parameters are, in addition to what your own vision is.

Is my dress wearable? Will it fall apart?

Most vintage gowns are in good shape and totally wearable! The only thing that will keep a dress from being useable is dry rot…this is when the fabric becomes brittle from age and contaminants in the dress (like sweat or food spills). You can test this by finding a section that is hidden on the inside) and pulling gently on the fibers of the fabric. If it tears when you pull, that means it is too old to wear. If it holds, then it is viable to alter and wear.

Can you get the discoloration out?

Usually we can improve the dress’s yellowness by soaking it in a vintage-friendly handwashing detergent. It often will brighten up a shade or so, but usually will not be a drastic change. If your dress has dark rusty-looking spots, we can spot-treat those to get an improvement, but usually they will not come out completely. I always encourage you to remember and embrace that your dress has a history and it adds to the character and sentimentality when it is not ~perfect~. I should also say that there is always somewhat of a risk when you soak a gown...but I will do my best to determine if I think it will be worth the risk…if not, you should either dryclean it or just let it be.

Is it possible to…?

When redesigning a vintage dress, the most important thing is that the changes look like they are original to the dress. It is nearly impossible to match old lace exactly…in both style and color…so we strive to use the existing materials of the dress as much as possible. If we need to try to integrate new materials in the gown, then it takes some time and effort to get it to look just right. In general, you will need to keep the overall sillouette of the gown. Once a dress is cut and built, the changes that can be made in sillouette are limited. Don’t worry, I will tell you if something is impossible or ill-advised. And sometimes when the bride has something really specific in mind or is a completely different size than the original dress, the best avenue is to essentially “harvest” the lace and/or other materials from the gown and start over.

Will I save money using a vintage gown?

Maybe, maybe not. Even with gowns bought at boutiques, there are always alterations that need to be made, and they average $500-1000. So, assuming you were given your vintage gown for free, you will save that money. However, when extensive changes are made to a vintage gown, the costs usually exceed that average, so you can be in the $1000-1500 range, or more. It is totally variable for each gown as well as each bride’s needs. Schedule a consultation if you want a quote for your vintage dress re-design!
